Welcome to StoryPlace

A free virtual library designed specifically for children.  This Pre-school library is full of adventures of online books that will take a child all over the world.  Stories, activities, videos, list of reading materials and hands on learning and so much fun things to do!  Imagine taking a trip to a place you’ve always imagine without leaving your room!  It will be an experience you will never forget!  Come on!  Let us get started and have some fun learning to read!

Get your bags and go!  We will be taking off on a plane with story themes to choose from.  Would you like to read about animals, babies, bath time fun?  Click on a story and you will be amazed!  When you are done reading, it is time to do an adventurous activity.  Clear your tray table and take out your pencils and crayons.  Don’t forget to clean up after you are done because it is time to freshen up and read a bath time story before going to bed.
There are five ways to raise a reader!  Talking with children is one of the best ways to learn new words, vocabulary, speech, grammar, information and importantly reading.  Singing with children is what they love to do.  A realistic way for children to learn about language when singing these favorite nursery rhymes “The Wheels on the Bus, Itsy Bitsy Spider, ABC song” just to name a few.  Incorporate learning with what they enjoy and love to do makes learning fun and motivating.  Teaching phonemic awareness with songs is more enjoyable and it is an essential component in reading.  Reading together, aloud or repeated reading is unavoidable.  It has to be a motivating routine so that children are able to read.  Children must first learn to read before they read to learn!  Simply talk to them, ask questions or simply talk about an interesting picture, person or thing.  Children love to retell stories they have read, so give them the opportunity to express their thoughts not just by retelling but by writing too!  Writing helps children tell their stories from their individual spoken language.  Children go through these development stages in spelling until they finally develop as writers by providing essential tools for them such as pencils, crayons and paper in hands view.  Scribbling and illustrating on paper, children begin to learn that spoken language is text written.  Last activity to get children ready to read is playing.  Everyone loves to play especially children!  Role playing is a natural way to teach children about the world around them, develop their language and related skills.
StoryPlace is a children’s digital learning library first opened to the public in 2000 and has been for years.  It has provided children and families books, activities a library might not offer.  It was originally developed with support and contributions from Smart Start of Mecklenburg County and numerous supporters.
Literacy is simply the ability to use language, numbers, images, computers and other basic means to understand, communicate, gain useful knowledge and use the dominant symbol systems of a culture. (2017, December). Literacy. Retrieved from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literacy.

Mary Jane’s Final Self-Reflection

ED638-01 Teaching with the Internet – Intercession 2017

Dr. Matilda Rivera

Buenas Dr. Rivera,

Si Mary Jane este.   This will be my final self-reflection to address the quality of my work in addressing and completing the requirements for the coursework ED638-01 “Teaching with the Internet”, Intercession 2017 under the supervision of Dr. Matilda Rivera.  I have been so fortunate to be enriched with knowledge and experiences that I have gained with the coursework assignments.  Before I started with this Master’s program, I was worried about the expectations that I had to demonstrate with these online assignments.  I am proud of myself thus far because I have been managing my time with home, work and school.  It has been quite a juggling act every day to accomplish all the duties of a mother, teacher and student.

ED638 “Teaching with the Internet” course has been very interesting, informative, useful and exciting!  I have been blessed to have learned so much taking this class.

I was bewildered navigating with Google Earth and visited places that I have always wondered about.  My first grade students will be just as excited when I take them on a trip to the many wonders of the world!

I know that I have done better for myself since receiving my Bachelors at the University of Guam.  I enjoyed going to school, creating projects, presentations and completing assignments throughout the 3 ½ years at UOG.  Just as with this course, I am motivated to do the assignments, complete them and turn them in.  I have made tremendous progress with the valuable knowledge this course has provided me.  It has changed my outlook about what I can achieve in a positive way and I am glad that it did!  Designing a personal blog, taking classes online, creating a platform, uploading onto Moodle, LiveText and more is something that I can tell others!  There are so much great ideas that this class has afforded me and it’s like a child in a candy store!  I am excited to implement all the things that I have learned and planning must be done for next school year!

I do not wish to work under stressful moments, so managing my time is my number one rule every day.  I need to accomplish something every day to feel great about myself.  I do not like to waste my precious moments not accomplishing anything.  If so, I feel that I woke up and wasted my day.  When I set my mind to complete a task with this class, I go forth and succeed!  Turning in assignments on time and being in attendance every day is what keeps me motivated day by day.

These past years brought a variety of topics for professional developments, trainings and meetings and will continue to extend and update to assure student learning is achieved.  The professional learning community is a time for enrichment, trainings and other related duties.  I will be attending a “Kagan Cooperative Learning Structure” training in a couple of weeks at the school site.  It is a new program that my school will be implementing next school year.

I have to be a role model for my students because they display what they have learned to others and I see me in them.  It is my students that make my teaching profession the happiest moments.  I can see that they have progressed since the onset of the school year and continue learning.  Today was a day to celebrate for I reviewed skills they have learned before Christmas break.  To my amazed, my first grade students have retained the skills they learned.  It was an exciting day for me and my TA.

I am actively present in the forum and labored countless hours during the Christmas break to complete as much of the assignments.  I have uploaded my assignments way before the due date.  I have been progressing and demonstrated great targets with these completed assignments thus far.  The interaction between my cohort mates on the forum has been active.  I am excited to see everyone in person as we walk down the path and receiving our degree!  This course has been an addition to my profession.  I am eternally grateful for my professors in providing me the opportunity to learn great things!  The tools that I have on my shelf will be used to supplement the learning environment in my classroom.  As I come to the final end of this course, I must say from the bottom of my heart, I have instilled precious knowledge to carry for the rest of my professional teaching career.  I have gained so much and it is quite difficult to explain how I feel about my accomplishments!

When the clock struck 12:00 midnight and the New Year came, I was at my desk completing homework!  It’s okay because the New Year brought great gifts for me to use in my classroom.

Grasias Adois Dr. Rivera for I have learned great gifts from this course.
