IRA Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website # 2
Book Adventure http://www.bookadventure.com/Home.aspx is a free online website sponsored by Sylvan Learning to encourage children to read independently. The website was launched in April 1999; the goal focused on being used to strengthen reading comprehension. It is a reading motivational program for students in grades K-8. The program encourages and prepares students to be lifelong readers. More than 446,000 parents, teachers, and students registered and over 1,900,000 quizzes completed to date.
Book Adventure helps to check comprehension of story elements: plot, setting, characters, problem, solution, and sequence of events. At the end of the story an online 5-10 question quiz is administered to the reader. Books that are more advance have 10 questions on the online quiz.
Book Adventure is an easy to access website, a resourceful literacy program which is very engaging that can be utilized by parents, students, and teachers. It can be a tool to show evidence in growth and provides validated printed reports for a child's grade on the comprehension quizzes. Using the library repository, students can find books by its title, author, and International Standard Book Number (ISBN). In the library there are various book series such as Dr. Seuss, Encyclopedia Brown, and Boxcar Children to name a few.
Book Adventure provides easy access to print off reports for student monitoring. It helps keep track of all the points the student earns so that they can win prizes. Parents and teachers can access the primary site features such as prize approval and account information. The website posts summer reading lists by grade levels and categories to choose from.
I would recommend using Book Adventure to promote literacy and motivate students to become lifelong readers. It enables students to pick and choose from a selection of books that are interesting to them. Overall, Book Adventure enhances reading skills and confidence.
