Reading Rockets (http://www.readingrockets.org/) is multimedia
resource for beginning readers, struggling readers, and research based strategies
and information for educators. Reading Rockets also connects with the PBS
television program, online services, and professional development opportunities
as a way to foster an enjoyment for reading through television and other social
media.
Reading Rockets build their strategies around the Common Core Standards. There are a variety of classroom strategies in their library to enhance literacy skills dealing with print awareness, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and writing. The strategies include instructions on administering the lesson, classroom videos, templates, examples, and supporting research. Reading Rockets also has a wide variety of children’s books and authors for students to choose from or may be recommended for them. Some books are downloadable in PDF versions, but others may need to be purchased online.
One of the main focus of Reading Rockets is to identify children who are having difficulties in reading and may be at risk for failing school and later in life. The website promotes the importance of early identification by having parents become more aware about evaluations for their child. With that said, parents can be their child’s advocate to enable them to meet the gap, whether it may be needing a school specialist, tutoring, reading clinics and etc. Reading Rockets also accommodate students who are second language learners and students with learning disabilities.
The website also offers “Fun Stuffs” for students to enjoy reading such as reading adventure packs, children’s literature quiz, web widgets, fun printables, and many more. Another feature about the website is their literacy apps, which are recommended for children in grades pre-K to grade three. It may function through the use of any mobile device. The apps are beneficial for practicing the student’s literacy skills and includes text-to-speech and audio books for students with dyslexia or other learning disabilities.
I recommend this website for students at the lower grade levels to enhance their reading skills. Students will also enjoy the tools it has to offer. It is also designed to be quite appealing and is very easy to navigate.
