Thank-you for the wonderful educational strategies and technological tools that I noted. It has been a pleasure and now it's time to say goodbye because all good things come to an end.

Lesson Sequence: Teacher will
ask students prior knowledge questions such as, do they know what planet they
live on, what is the name of their island, do they know what village their
school is in, and the street name that leads to their school. Ask students if
they have ever seen a map before.
Teacher will go over
vocabulary words such as island, village, street, and directional words such
as up, down, near, far, left, and right.
Teacher will show a map of
Guam to the students prior to accessing Google Earth Pro. Teacher will tell students that they will
get a better view and real photographs of their school and its surrounding
neighborhood
Teacher will access Google
Earth Pro by first showing a 3D version of the Earth. The teacher will show the students the
search icon and input, “Guam.”
Students will be able to view Guam as an island. The teacher will then search for Ordot
Chalan Pago Elementary School.
Students will be able to locate and see their school.
Teacher will click on the icon
of the yellow man, which is in the bottom, right hand corner of the screen. Students will be able to take a virtual
fieldtrip from the beginning of Judge Sablan Street all the way to their
school. Students will be able to
recognize some of the landmarks leading to their school.
Teacher will have a discussion
on the students’ reaction to their virtual field trip experience. Teacher will search the home addresses of
some of the students to view where they live and the surrounding area.
Teacher will model how to make
a simple map of the school ground.
Teacher will have a map
drawing activity in which the students will draw one large map. Students will give their input as to what
needs to be drawn on the map. The map
will begin from the entrance of Judge Sablan Street all the way to their
school. They will draw places they
recognize such as San Juan Bautista Church, JML Store, and Ordot Dental
Clinic.
Teacher will assess students
by having them draw their own individual map of the school neighborhood.
|
||
|
Reflections: I think my
students will like this lesson because they get to experience traveling to
their school by virtual of Google Earth Pro. I like how you could go from the 3-D globe
of the Earth, search by typing in Guam, the village, the street, and finally
the school. I think the students will
like exploring the 2D feature, having a 360 degree view of the neighborhood,
and being right there in the street traveling to their destination. Students see far more via Google Earth Pro
than just looking at a classroom map or globe.

Teaching with the Internet
Effective
Literacy Website #7 Exploration
Reading Bear
Reading Bear (http://www.readingbear.org/About.aspx)
is a free non-profit Reading program that provides over 1,200 vocabulary words,
along with 50 presentations, which covers all the main phonics rules and
principles. Children ages 4-7 will find
this program easy to learn.
This is a great reading program used
for the whole class. Presentations can
be played as a video or an interactive slide show. They are nicely presented and cover step-by-step
phonics principles. The first four
presentations features words such as, dog
that is pronounced at four different speeds. The fifth presentation features the word dog, which is used in a sentence. The
sixth presentation reads the same sentence using an illustration of a dog. The
last presentation reads the same sentence using a video of a dog as it pertains
to the sentence. This is an effective method to learn how to decode words which
leads to reading more advanced words in this program such as thunderstorm and
transportation.
Reading Bear is great for students
learning English. It is also a good
source to use for remedial programs. The seven presentations is the reason why
this program is great for these types of students. It uses the seven different presentations to
teach a featured vocabulary word.
Reading a word at four different speeds, starting slowly then reading at
a normal speed. Then using the word in a
sentence. Next using an illustration with the sentence. Lastly using a video
with the sentence. In total, the
vocabulary word is presented seven times which is helpful when you are learning
to read.
This reading program also allows you
to click on any word and it will sound it out.
The program has quizzes, reviews of the program, and interludes, which
are art and music breaks during the presentations.
As an educator, I especially like
what I learned about the presentations.
This would make an effective learning tool in my classroom. I would recommend this reading program to my
colleagues.
Hafa Adai Dr. Rivera and Classmates,

IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #7
Igniting a passion for reading in children can be the key to their success in the world. Many educators and parents search for strategies to help young children grow to share a love of reading. KidLit Tv (https://kidlit.tv/) is a website that can help engage students by providing supplemental activities and videos that make reading fun!
KidLit Tv was founded by Julie Gribble. As an author herself, Julie wanted a place where authors and illustrators can connect with their audiences to help promote their books. The website has been a huge success and has won awards such as the Parent’s Choice Gold Award and the Norton Juster Award.
The KidLit TV shows included on the website are broken up into six sections. The first section, StoryMakers is a talkshow featuring bestselling Kidlit authors and illustrators. The StoryMakers section can help students understand the authors purpose for writing the book. They can also learn things they may have never known about a book they have already read through the talkshows. It is a great feature for parents if they are searching for books for their children because they are able to learn all the details of a story through one episode.
The Read Out Loud series features KidLit authors reading their books aloud. The best part of the series is it provides additional animation to capture children’s attention. The featured authors are enthusiastic and funny in the episodes which can motivate students to keep watching. The third series, Ready Set Draw, features illustrators teaching viewers how to draw characters or images from their stories. This is great for students who love to draw. The series enables educators and parents to integrate art into literacy.
The website also features crafts and activities all related to literacy. The crafts include activities such as, making pom pom book marks, crafts that match holiday stories, and cooking recipes to supplement a variety of texts. This series is a great way to extend a story and integrate other subject areas into literacy.
Children are often captivated by movie trailers. They may ask to watch a movie by simply viewing a short preview. KidLit TV has brought the same concept, but to books! The website features book trailers for stories to captivate students into reading a particular book. This is a great feature to showcase to students prior to reading a text. Building background knowledge and holding conversations prior to reading a story can help students succeed. The book trailers can be used to make predictions, identify setting, characters, and other story elements featured in the preview.
The website offers many more features and resources that are extremely useful for students, parents, and educators. Teachers can showcase the website by having students watch a series, engage students in fun supplemental activities after reading a book, or preview the website before planning lessons for great ideas. KidLit TV has truly brought the fun to reading!
