IRA Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #4

Bookopolis (https://bookopolis.com) is an online community for young readers. It provides a safe and fun online environment for elementary and middle school students to connect with other young readers about books. Bookopolis is a free literacy resource for educators and students. The features and activities the site offers, makes it a worthwhile resource for teachers and students to discover and share a love of reading.

To provide some insight on Bookopolis’ mission and background, it was created by Kari Ness Riedel, a social entrepreneur and mother of two elementary school aged boys who love to read. Inspired by her children’s love of reading and enthusiasm to find new books, Riedel created an online community for young readers to collect and manage books. She wanted to create a fun-filled place where kids are excited about books and want to share their love of reading. So, Bookopolis was made with the mission to ignite a love of reading for fun in kids ages 7-12 that will last a lifetime.

Bookopolis is user-friendly and seamless to navigate. Students can use it as a tool to discover new books to read. They could also find book recommendations and reviews by peers their age. With a Bookopolis account, students will have access to a safe, social platform where they can express themselves as readers and share the books they read. Bookopolis also offers students the opportunity to earn online points and awards by adding books to their online bookshelf, rating books, and reviewing books.

Furthermore, teachers will enjoy Bookopolis because it is a free resource to use in their classroom. Signing up and creating an educator account is quick and easy! Teachers can use this site as a tool to build reading collaborations and connections. Teachers will appreciate that Bookopolis’ features and activities are aligned to Common Core Reading and Writing Standards for grades 2nd to 7th. Some online activities that teachers can have students do are reading logs, book reviews, book reports, and book recommendations. With Bookopolis’ tool, teachers can track students’ reading progress and provide feedback. Another unique feature about joining the Bookopolis program is that teachers can earn free books through quality student book reviews. Upon signing up, teachers can choose up to three free books!

Overall, Bookopolis offers features and activities to support reading and writing. The activities were designed to have students practice opinion/persuasive writing, improve reading comprehension, and build computer skills. Through Bookopolis teachers and students will engage in a digital platform that engages and develops a life-long love of reading.
