IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #6

Epic!

Epic! (https://www.getepic.com/) is a digital children’s library.  It is a subscription based ebook service for children ages 2-12.  Children and parents can browse from over thousands of books, watch videos online or on their mobile devices, access quizzes, or collections.

You are able to search and browse for books by author, title, or key words.  You could also use the top drop down menu to browse by subject or categories. You can sort by collections, books, read to me, videos, or audiobooks.  You can also use the advanced search for more specific results such as reader age, AR level, and the Lexile level (books matched to a student’s reading level & ability).  When you tap on a book it provides a synopsis, the author, publish, reading level, and estimated time it will take to read the book.  When you tap on the page, it will expand.  If you swipe the page, it will turn the page.  By swiping the page, you can flip through the pages.  When you tap on the bookmark, it will mark your page.

Epic! is free for educators and librarians.  Teachers can create student profiles for their class.  These profiles can be customized, by changing the students’ avatars, colors, and frames.  Students can earn badges and achievements, each time they complete a book.  Students are able to track the amount of time they’ve read, the number of books read, and their favorite books.

Epic! is a fun way to encourage students to read.  Students and educators have a large collection of books to choose from, with more titles added weekly.  Students will love the badges and achievements earned just by reading books. As educators, we need to find fun ways to motivate our students to read.  Epic! is a fun and effective literacy website that will do so.
