IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #5

Book Adventure (http://www.bookadventure.com/Home.aspx) is a free, online reading program created by the experts at Sylvan Learning. This program is for children in grades Kindergarten to eighth. Book Adventure’s goal is to help kids learn to love reading through interactive tools, games, and motivational rewards. In addition, the website is filled with tips and resources perfect for parents and teachers to improve reading skills and track progress for their children/students. On the Book Adventure website, there are five different tabs that contain information, educational resources, literacy games, and sample tools.
Furthermore, the five tabs the website have available are Homepage, What’s New, Zid’s Zone, Teacher’s Lounge, and Parent’s Place. The Homepage welcomes everyone to join the book adventure by sharing a brief summary of the program. Users can also start the adventure by finding a book to read or taking a quiz. The What’s New tab shares the new features provided from the program. The Kid’s Zone explains how children can find great books to read and take quizzes on the books they have read to earn points for awesome prizes! The Kid’s Zone provides a Book Finder, Quiz-O-Matic, games, and prize library. The Teacher’s Lounge offers the same features, but with additional tips for using the program in a classroom setting. Lastly, Parent’s Place is where parents can monitor their children’s reading progress, track quiz results, and approve their child’s prize selection.
Overall, Book Adventure is a wonderful website for parents, teachers, and students because of the abundant amount of resources. I believe that everyone involved will benefit from this program. As a teacher, I tried registering for the Book Adventure, but sadly, we cannot complete the registration because Guam is not under the countries provided. Unfortunately, I believe that would be the only con to the program. In the future, I hope Book Adventure will include Guam in their countries, so we can benefit from this amazing literacy website.
