LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE
Unit/Theme Title: Social Studies/Geography
“Maps and globes”
Description:
In this unit, students will be first introduced to components and purpose of a map and globe. The will use Google Earth and Google Maps to learn and understand more about the features of a map and globe. At the end of the unit students will be comparing and contrasting a map and globe through a Venn diagram.
Goals and Objectives:
In this unit, students will be able to:
  • Identify a map and globe.
  • Identify the components and features of a map and globe.
  • Compare the similarities and differences between maps and globes. 
  • Understand the importance of maps and globes
  • Explore Google Earth and Google Maps to gain a better understanding of maps and globes.
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Standards:
Guam Standard:
K.3.1 Identify and recognize the difference between maps and globes.
K.3.2 Use words and phrases that indicate locations, directions, chronology, and time.
CCSS ELA Support Standard:
K.RL.9 With prompting and support, compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in familiar stories.
Duration: 7 days

Lesson Sequence: (40 minutes each day)
Introduction: (5 minutes each day)
  • Tell students, that for this unit they will be learning about maps and globes.
  • Ask students if they know what a map and globe is.
  • Each day review on the previous days lesson to see what students remember.

Instruction: (15 minutes)
  • Day 1
Introduce students to pictures of maps and globes. Teacher will then present a video explaining what a map is and its importance.
  • Day 2
Teacher will use projector to have her students see and explore Google Maps as a class. While exploring teacher will write down features and components of a map on the board. Students will write down the features and components in a notebook.
  • Day 3
Teacher will present a video explaining what a globe is and its importance.
  • Day 4
With projector teacher will use Google Earth to help students understand more about globes and its features. Teacher will write down features and components on the board. Students will copy the components and features in their notebooks.
  • Day 5
Students will work in pairs to explore Google Maps and Google Earth in the computer lab. Teacher will direct students as to what buttons to select when exploring Google Earth and Maps.
  • Day 6
Students will work in groups of 4 to create and present a T chart of the features of a map and globe. Students will phonetically spell each feature and draw a picture next to each word.
  • Day 7
Students will work in groups of 4 to create and present a Venn diagram of the similarities and differences between maps and globes.

Independent work: (15 minutes)
  • Each day students will write and draw a picture of what they learned from the lesson in their notebooks

Assessment/Quick Check: (5 minutes)
  • Students will orally name some differences and similarities between a map and globe.
  • Student will orally identify features specific to maps and globes.
Reflection:

Students will reflect on what they have learned each day by writing words or short sentences and drawing pictures of what they learned about maps and globes.
