IRA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #3
Flocabulary (https://www.flocabulary.com) is an amazing learning program that can be used by educators and parents for students all grades; to develop core literacy. Using an array of educational hip-hop music, videos, and activities which are incorporated into lessons to help students remember key words such as events, facts and important ideas. The catchy tunes and phrases are like the pneumonic devices used to teach students, which supports reinforcing concepts being learned to increase student achievement. Flocabulary can be used to supplement the content already being taught in the classroom. The resources and activities are fun and engaging to supplement ELA, Math, Social Studies, Science, Health and Physical Education through a variety of songs, videos, and exercises. The learning program also includes lessons and units aligned to the Common Core State Standards. A beneficial educational tool to promote literacy for readers and non-readers.
I found the website to be really neat having an original speed option to watch the video the way the viewer will comprehend in original, slower or slowest mode. A great modification for those who require it. Another interesting option I found on the website, is the discuss tab which provides questions to be discussed and explored relating to the topic to enhance comprehension. I utilized the amazing program and customized my classroom with technology savvy tools using the activity as an anticipatory setting to introduce area and perimeter to supplement instruction. The videos and activities activated prior knowledge, which motivated and stimulated students background knowledge on the topic. The program uses rhythm, rhyme, and music which provided interesting and enhancing instructional activities for all types of learners to support student achievement. Flocabulary’s award-winning vocabulary program for grades K-8 “The Word Up Project” has shown great affects to increase vocabulary proficiency and raise scores on the state tests.
I would encourage educators to try the 45-day free trial. If interested in signing up, the awesome learning program can be purchased as an Individual Plan for $96. It’s a great learning tool to increase literacy and beneficial to boost student achievement. It contains user-friendly tools and applications that takes learning to another level.
